Tasmania's radio controlled model helicopter club was formed just over 10 years ago by five blokes who wanted to create a club dedicated only to model helis. Over this period of time, they have had a multitude of members come and go, but have always managed to maintain five members. They also have a couple of associate members who like to fly model helicopters with them, as well as fixed wing at their regular club. The Club is fortunate in that they have a friendly farmer who allows the use of one of his paddocks free of charge. By way of a 'thank you' the club supplies a couple of cartons of beer at Xmas time to his family to show their appreciation for the use of his land. For the last ten years, Hobart Rotor Sport have been invited every other year to assist the Model Makers and Collectors Association in making a success of a function to raise money for charity. The Club provides a static display of model helicopters and, weather permitting, puts on an aerial display. They have also been involved at a few other venues and a lot of interest is shown. The club facilities are limited to a couple of tables, a wind sock pole and belting , which they roll out like carpet, to place their gear on. The club owns several items of equipment for general use within the club - servo checker, battery charger, car battery, head loaders and several video tapes on learning to fly helis. Beginners are more than welcome, although membership is a pre-requisite for insurance purposes |
